Something Missing

"Have you ever had this... feeling?"

"What feeling?" she asks.

He hesitates.

"It's hard to explain," he begins. "Have you ever felt like your heart was surrounded by clouds? Big dark clouds - the type you see on a stormy day."

She nods slowly, brows furrowed, her gaze focused intently on his eyes.

"And it's raining inside your chest."

He returns her gaze.

"It's raining a black viscous liquid - thicker and denser than anything you could ever imagine. And when each drop lands on your heart with a resounding thud, it feels like the force of gravity has increased tenfold, or even more. It feels like your existence is being eaten away by something intangible, something ethereal, until you blend in with everything around you. I mean, you're still there but you're not."

He looks away.

"And the feeling lingers. It stays with you until it decides to leave... like an unwelcome guest."

The two stand in silence.

"Maybe something's missing in your life," she says after a while. "Something that would make that feeling go away, cleanse your heart, drag you back into existence."

He nods slowly, brows furrowed, his gaze focused intently on her eyes. She returns his gaze.

"What are you missing?" she asks.

You.
